Chilli Plant Pests To Watch Out For
If you are growing chilli plants, you know you have to plant them using the right method and provide the right conditions. Although chilli plants are fairly easy to grow, there are ‘dangers’ in your vegetable garden that can kill your plants at any moment.
Two things can destroy your chilli plants, namely living and nonliving agents. Living or biotic agents are insects, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Nonliving or abiotic agents are extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, poor sunlight, poor soil pH, air pollutants, and insufficient nutrients.
In this blog post, we are pleased to discuss the common living agents that can affect your chilli plants. Once you know who the enemy is, you can fight the problem. After all, you want your chilli plants to be healthy to produce fruits.
Indoor Chilli Plants
If you are growing chilli plants indoors, it’s important to ensure your plants do not suffer from damping-off diseases. If this occurs, your plants will become discoloured, and the seedlings will fall and die.
An excellent way to prevent bacteria is to add to the water a weak chamomile tea solution. Another natural solution to prevent mold is to add cinnamon to the top of the soil.
It is essential to place your indoor chilli plants in a place that has good airflow. You could keep the door open or even run a fan to get the air to circulate. Doing this will prevent mold from growing and strengthen your chilli plants at the same time.
You could also use sticky traps near your plants to help capture insects that might disturb your plants.
Common Pests
Chilli plants are healthy and very forgiving. However, some pests like your chilli plants as much as you do. These four major bugs may disturb your plants:
- Aphids – Small insects that are usually found underneath old leaves. A fantastic way to control them is by looking for natural predators such as ladybirds and parasitic wasps.
- Whiteflies – Tiny white moths that are found on the underside of the leaf. To control them, use white oil. Avoid spraying white oil in the heat of the day.
- Broad Mites – If your chilli plants look curl and deformed when the shoots are small, you probably have Broad Mites. These creatures are so little it is impossible to see them right away.
- Fruit Flies – One of the most devastating pests of all. Fruit flies lay their eggs in your pods, and the hatched maggots eat away at them. Prevention is the only known cure.
Prevention
Some of the most common natural enemies are:
- Ladybirds to avoid lice and aphids
- Hedgehogs to combat snails
- Green lacewings to control aphids
You can also prevent visible pests by spraying them with the garden hose or picking up snails yourself.
When you are growing chilli plants, it is essential to have a crop rotation in the garden to prevent nematodes in the soil. Make sure to grow chilli plants in a different bed each year. Remember that the new location must have a good ground and receive regular sunlight.
Always remove infected plant parts. Remember it is always best to remove a branch or a chilli than risking further spreading. Moreover, good fungi and soil bacteria can protect your chilli plants from intruders. You can use fertilizer to strengthen your chillies too.
If an infestation occurs despite all the abovementioned are done, do not use chemicals immediately. For healthy chilli plants, a few pests should not be a problem. Usually, it is regulated naturally. However, if your plants are weak and are not in good shape, try natural pesticides such as white oil, neem oil, and neem powder.
The Bottom Line
