1. Prepare the Seeds
The first thing you need to do is get a glass of water and soak the papaya seeds at room temperature for a day.

2. Prepare the Seedling Tray
You can also use an empty pot as a seedling tray.

Fill in three parts of compost with two parts of red sandy soil and one part of fertilizer. Mix it well.

3. How to Germinate Seeds
After soaking, place 2 papaya seeds per hole, at the center of the tray. Sprinkle water to keep the soil moist.

4. Transplant Germinated Seeds

When the papaya seedling grows 4 to 5 leaves, transplant them into well-drained sandy loam soil. The distance between plants should be 2 rows of 8 feet.

After the transplant, add a thin layer of compost and sprinkle water to keep the soil moist.

Fertilizers give plants optimum growth and development.

The recommended fertilizer after 7 days is 100 grams; 14 days after sowing is 50 grams.

8. Harvest
After 250 days, it is time to harvest. Harvested fruits should be up to 31 centimeters.

Tips For Growing Papayas From Seeds

  • Papayas love the sun, so make sure you select a sunny and sheltered place in your garden.
  • They need very good soil to grow into a healthy one rich in organic matter and nutrients.
  • Papaya plants can be male, female, or bisexual.
    • The first flowers are from male papaya plants. You may recognize them, because they have long, thin stalks with several small blooms.
    • Female plants are usually single blooms, they are bigger, and they are very close to the trunk.
    • To ensure good pollination, you only need one male plant for every ten to fifteen female plants; so you can cut most of the male plants.
  • Water. In hot weather, like in Malaysia, papayas need a lot of water. But be careful not to overwater because this is the most common mistake when growing papayas.
  • Use a fertilizer with nitrogen.
  • Papayas fruit all year round. If the weather is warm, like in Malaysia, you will not have any problems.
  • Remember the older a papaya gets, the weaker it becomes, so it is a good idea to always have young papayas. Grow another patch every few months.

Problems When Growing Papayas

  • Root rot due to overwatering
  • Strong winds
  • Birds, Fruit Bats, and Possums
  • Viruses and Diseases are due to sucking insects

The easiest solution for these problems is just to keep planting a lot, this way you can make sure you are keeping only the best trees.

Papayas provide a lot of benefits and they should be part of your daily diet. Since it is so easy and cheap to grow from seeds and contains good nutrients, you have no excuse not to eat it every day.

Happy planting!
