How To Grow Tomatoes In Hot Tropical Weather?

Tomatoes are preferred by gardeners because they’re easy to grow, but there are still things to watch out for when growing them in a tropical place like Malaysia.

They need sun and heat to bloom, but not too much. Having a plan and following a care guideline routine can help your tomato seeds grow successfully.

It’s important to understand that hot and humid weather can stimulate fungal issues, pests, and more. Still, growing tomatoes is a marvelous experience, and all you need is to take extra precautions.

Keep reading to learn the most effective hacks to grow tomatoes in hot tropical weather.

6 Tips To Grow Tomatoes In The Tropics

1. Select The Right Variety

If you’re going to grow tomatoes in hot tropical conditions, it’s vital to choose the right type. The best variety to cultivate in hot and humid conditions is cherry tomatoes.

Another good option is Heirloom, even though they’re less resistant to heat. Heirlooms are more likely to develop fungal diseases, so it’s vital to keep an eye on them to ensure proper growth.

There are other kinds of tomato seeds that are heat and humid-tolerant, so choose the one that best fits your needs.

2. Location

One of the most vital elements when growing tomato seeds in the tropics is to find a suitable location. The area must receive at least twelve hours of sun a day.

It would be best to protect the plants from strong winds, but they require a breeze to help with pollination and develop firm stems. The soil should be rich in organic matter and well-drained.

Moreover, it’s possible to grow tomato seeds in containers; in fact, you should start in pots for the best results. The containers must be big to encourage growth.

Place pots near a sunny window as they need sun. If this is not an option, use a growing light. Arrange containers together, but make sure they’re not so close that leaves touch each other as this can spread disease.

3. Add Mulch

It’s a brilliant idea to add 5 to 7cm of mulch throughout the plants to ensure the soil remains moist. You should replenish mulch if it breaks down.

We recommend using organic materials such as shredded bark, chopped leaves, and cotton hulls to make the soil better as they crumble.

4. Water Regularly

You need to water tomatoes consistently to prevent gaps and encourage the growth of big and round fruits.

Since you can grow tomatoes all year long in Malaysia, you should water the plants every day in the rainy season (if needed). When the weather is dry and hot, you need to water every day, and sometimes even twice daily.

Make sure to water at ground level. Tomato seeds prefer water around the base of the plant. When you water directly to the soil, it is easier to prevent fungus diseases and develop a healthy root system. Note that tomatoes are made from water, and through the plant’s roots, you get water inside the plant. Watering at the base of the plant supports this process.

It’s vital to water whenever the top 2.5cm of soil is dry. As mentioned, you might be required to water twice daily if it’s extremely hot or the soil is sandy. Avoid overwatering as this can suffocate the plant’s roots.

5. Avoid Over Fertilisation

Fertilization is a great way to stimulate plants to grow. However, when the temperature is hot and humid, too much fertilizer can cultivate leafy plants with no fruit.

It’s important to prevent tomato plants from growing in excess as it makes them more exposed to deterioration from insects and diseases.

6. Make Some Shade

If you don’t have a covered area in your vegetable garden, we recommend creating one. It’s a wise idea to use a wood frame covered with shade cloth to filter sunlight and protect tomato plants during hot afternoons.

We recommend allowing full sunlight during the mornings. Make sure to use 50% shade cloth because tomatoes demand a minimum of twelve hours of daylight.

Moreover, it’s best to use a shade arrangement open to the east. This way, your tomato plants can receive full sunlight in the mornings and be covered from afternoon rays.

Keep in mind that you should only make some shade if the temperature reaches 32° Celsius.

In a Nutshell

We hope this post provides useful tips to grow tomato seeds in hot and humid weather. Remember to take extra precautions as growing tomatoes in the tropics can stimulate fungal issues, pests, and more.
