How To Prepare Soil For Vegetable Seeds

When you buy your vegetable seeds online, you need to make sure you grow them in good soil. Healthy soil is the basis of healthy vegetables and a healthy environment. If you wish to use fewer fertilizers and pesticides, the key is to have good garden soil. In other words, having good soil will definitely develop your plants’ health.

Even the easiest vegetable seeds to plant will go to waste if the soil doesn’t have the nutrients, moisture, and air to help your garden be healthy. Here are some vegetable gardening tips and hacks for beginners to prepare the soil for your garden and make sure your garden is a success.

1. Choose The Location

The first thing you need to know before growing your vegetable seeds is to choose an area of your garden that gets at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily.

Most vegetable seeds you buy online will need full sunlight to grow healthy. Choose a place in your garden that has sufficient space for the vegetable seeds you want to grow and receives direct sunlight throughout the day.

Mark the spot in your garden once you find it. Your vegetable garden could be any size you want but it is a good idea to have at least 3.7-4.6 square meters so that you have enough space to grow your vegetables.

2. Rich, Crumbly Soil

The best soil for your vegetable seeds to grow is in rich, crumbly loam soil filled with life, like earthworms and microbes. Improve the soil with compost, and other soil builders such as shredded leaves to build up productive soil.

3. Tilling

If you want to break up the soil to add soil remedies and correct nutrient or pH imbalances, a way to do it is by tilling. Just make sure not to overuse this technique. Tilling the same soil regularly will derive in fine, powdery dust that dries up and packs hard like concrete when dry weather follows rain.

Remember you can also use a shovel to loosen up the soil. Make sure to dig 20-25 centimeters deep. Just make sure there aren’t any pipes or electrical wires underground before you start digging.

As a general rule, never till or lose wet soil. Doing this will damage the soil’s structure, and it will prevent vegetable seeds to grow in the future. Wait until the soil is dry before working on it.

4. Squeeze The Soil

To see if the soil crumbles easily you must squeeze it in your hand. Always use gardening gloves to avoid any skin irritation.

Good soil should not be hard, otherwise, it means you have clay soil and it is too thick for vegetable seeds to grow; now if the soil doesn’t form a ball at all, then it is too sandy.

Don’t forget to test the soil in different areas of your vegetable garden.

 5. Double Digging

Double digging is a common practice to improve the drainage and aeration of poor soil. This method consists of removing a row of soil to a depth of about 30 centimeters, saving the excavated soil on a tarp.

Next, loosen the dense layer of soil that is usually found below the uppermost topsoil layer, in that trench with a spading fork. Once you’re finished, move to the next row. You need to do this until you reach the end of the bed.

It sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but if you don’t want to waste the vegetable seeds you buy online this will give you the perfect base to grow healthy plants.

6. Use A Soil Test Kit

It is a good idea to check the nutrients of your soil with a soil test kit. To do it gather 5-10 scoops of soil samples from different areas in your vegetable garden plot, and mix them with your trowel until they are completely combined.

Grab the soil test kit and scoop the soil into the containers, and break open the capsules in each container. Fill the containers with water and shake them until the water change colour.  To determine the pH and nutrients compare the water of the colors with the guide given in the test kit.
