How To Grow Sweeter Tomatoes?

If you have a vegetable garden, it’s recommended to grow tomatoes from seeds in it. Trust us, the tomatoes you grow in your own vegetable garden will taste so much better than those you buy.

Tomatoes with higher sugar content are sweeter, and those with more acid taste sour. This means that not all varieties are similar. Keep in mind that there are multiple factors that decide how sweet the tomatoes are.

A tomato’s sweetness is composed of factors such as temperature, soil type, amount of water, and sunlight provided to the fruit while developing. For most gardeners, the best fruit is the one with a lower acidity level and a higher level of sugar.

6 Tips For Growing Sweeter Tomatoes

Start by selecting the proper tomato seeds. A rule of thumb is that large varieties are usually less sweet, so grow smaller types like grape and cherry tomatoes if you want sweeter tomatoes.

Here are the hacks for growing sweeter tomatoes.

1. Sow Tomato Seeds Indoors

Tomatoes are warm-season plants, and it’s crucial to avoid exposing the fruit to extreme heat or cold. We recommend sowing the seeds indoors for six to eight weeks.

Remember to wait until the temperature is between 23° to 33° Celsius for setting out sturdy seedlings in the garden. In Malaysia, it’s usually from the beginning of March until the last week of May.

Ensure the containers on a south-facing window have the proper light levels for your growing tomato seedlings. Keep the plants in pots until they’re approximately 10cm tall.

2. Keep A Consistent Temperature

Tomato seeds germinate at around 21° Celsius, but they can germinate at a slightly lower or higher temperature.

The most vital thing for good germination is maintaining temperature from changing too intensely, particularly in the early stages of growth.

3. Soil

Tomatoes develop best in well-drained soil in a place that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Keep in mind that it’s crucial to grow tomato seeds in full sun because when the fruit develops and starts to ripen, the sun’s heat promotes a sweet flavor.

We recommend adding plentiful amounts of compost to the planting spots before transplanting the seedlings; this improves the drainage and nourishment of your tomato plants.

4. Fertiliser

Another vital element to increase sweetness in tomato plants is to provide plenty of nutrients for them to grow healthily and vigorously. You can use fertilizer, like 10-10-10, during the growing period

Don’t forget to apply water-soluble fertilizer designed explicitly for tomato seeds every 12 days. Remember, it’s key to give the plant the nutrients it requires to develop its sweet flavor.

5. Space Tomato Seeds

It’s essential to leave plenty of space between plants to grow and increase fruit production. Note that tomatoes demand the freedom to grow. When tomato plants are packed, the sun can’t reach them well, so it’s challenging for the plant to develop sweetness.

It’s recommended to leave them between 90 to 120cm apart to enhance air circulation and stop rivalry for water and nutrients.

6. Watering

Another critical element to improve tomato sweetness is to water consistently. It’s essential to sow seeds into moist soil and then make sure to water tomato seedlings below.

Tomato plants in containers usually need to be watered daily. It’s a wise idea to water until it runs from the bottom. When the soil feels dry, about 2.50cm below the surface, you need to water again.

Once the plants are in the vegetable garden, it’s crucial to water them in the morning. Once the temperatures are higher, you need to water twice a day. Keep in mind that tomato plants usually demand 2.5 to 5cm of water a week.

In a Nutshell

Many factors contribute to how much sweetness tomato plants will develop, such as weather conditions, fertilizer, tomato seeds variety, soil, and sunlight.

Every plant is different, so be patient. Once you taste the freshness and sweetness of your homegrown tomatoes, it’ll all be worth it.
