What is The Ideal Soil and Climate for Corn Seeds to Grow

Corn is one of the best vegetables to grow. There are several types of corn, such as sweet, field, and flint. Tropical corn seeds are one of the most popular corn varieties to grow in Malaysia. They’re grown in many vegetable gardens for their delicious flavor and exceptional benefits.

When you’re planting tropical corn seeds, many elements influence the yield. It’s essential to understand that there are some factors we can’t control, but to give the corn crop the best chance, we need to focus on the things we can control.

It’s crucial to plant corn seed at a depth equal to 5 centimeters. If you sow the corn too shallow, the kernel can’t achieve good seed-to-soil contact. One of the main problems with growing tropical corn seedsis uneven soil moisture.

Climate

Another essential element is to keep in mind that corn is a tropical crop and it’s best grown in warm weather. Tropical corn seeds are easy to grow, but they need growing space and plenty of sunlight. Make sure you select a growing spot that receives at least six hours of full sun each day. Corn seeds need sunny growing weather between 23-30° Celsius and well-moderate rains or irrigation. This means 40 or more centimeters during the growing season.

Experts recommend planting corn seeds directly into the soil as seedlings don’t transplant well. The time for corn to grow to harvest will vary depending on the type you grow. It can range from 60 to 90 days. So, it’s crucial to select the corn type that best suits your growing season.

Soil

The most important thing for growing good corn crops is good soil. Tropical corn seeds require rich, moist soil. Before planting seeds, you need to make sure soil temperature ranges between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. Due to Malaysia’s climate, this should not be a problem.

A rich, moist soil should also be highly fertile and have beneficial organisms. We recommend well-drained soil with organic matter and enough nutrients to provide the plant needs.

It would be best if you also considered soil texture. If corn seeds are planted in high clay content soils, don’t plant them more profound than 6 centimeters. However, you can growtropical corn seeds 7.5 centimeters deep in lighter sandy soils.

It’s recommended to check the different soil types to determine corn seeding depths. It’s essential to evaluate soil at the time of planting as it varies. Please note that corn is a heavy feeder, especially when it comes to nitrogen. That’s why we recommend the use of fertiliser. It’s a wise idea to test the soil to determine the pH level and nutrient requirements.

It’s essential to keep corn plantations free of weeds and grasses. You can use mulch or similar material to control weeds and hold in moisture.

Tips For Best Growing Corn

• It’s good to cover the seeds with soil to stop birds or animals from eating them. If you’re continually losing the seeds to birds or animals, we recommend using a chicken wire over the row until the plants begin growing. Don’t forget to remove it before the plant’s sprouts are damaged.
• When planting, you need to plant the seeds in at least three rows twelve to fifteen centimeters apart. Don’t forget to thin plants to 25 to 30 centimeters apart.
• For best corn seeds germination, make sure the soil is warm and space the seeds closer than recommended.
• Remember to use 2 to 3 pounds of fertiliser, like 10-10-10, for every 100 square feet of the vegetable garden. The best way to do it is to spread it evenly over the soil and let the fertiliser penetrate 7 to 10 centimeters deep. Always rake the soil to smooth the area.

Finally, remember growing tropical corn seeds is easy as all you need is warm weather and a rich-nutrient soil.
